The effects of H5N1 are still being felt across the livestock industry, even though it has mostly fell out of public focus. While there has been only one minor detection of H5N1 in U.S. swine, the industry is still prepared in the event of an outbreak. Dr. Marisa Rotolo, National Pork Board director of swine health, gave an update on the current status of H5N1 in the pork industry.
Dr. Rotolo said that many organizations across the industry have been working together to monitor H5N1 and work on a potential response plan should an outbreak happen.
While they can’t directly control the U.S. response plan for H5N1, Dr. Rotolo said they have put together a response guide that can keep state and federal leaders updated on what the swine industry can do.
Dr. Rotolo said the swine industry is confident in its ability to handle a potential outbreak, but they are still taking the opportunity to conduct as much research as possible on H5N1.
