The dairy industry has faced some scrutiny as of late, especially as it pertains to the safety of products and H5N1, formerly known as “bird flu” and “High-Pathogenic Avian Influenza”. The United States Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration have stood firm in assuring the public that our dairy is safe.
It is also important to remember dairy has a story well beyond the recent headlines and concerns. That is where the story of promotion comes in. Each year, checkoff dollars are used to help support the industry and educate consumers on the benefits of including real milk and other dairy products into your daily diet. Charles Krause is the Chair of the Midwest Dairy Board, and he talks about the board’s mission to “Make Every Drop Count” by wisely investing checkoff dollars into the ways they can help tell dairy’s story. They took a lot of great approaches to making that happen.
That work was also done in partnership with retailers to help promote dairy products to consumers.
Promotion is only part of the investment done with checkoff dollars. Like any of the other commodity groups that use a checkoff, investments in research and innovation are also a top priority.
