There have been concerns raised since we learned that High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) crossed the species barrier to Dairy herds in different parts of the country, mainly in the plains. Producers are concerned about the safety of their herd and making sure that it doesn’t hurt the quality of their production. Consumers are concerned about the quality of the products that they are purchasing for their families.
All of these are valid concerns and that is why the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is taking the time to address those concerns. This way they can help dispel any fear that is being spread around by those who wish to harm the animal ag industry, or by those who may want to turn this into a bigger issue than it needs to be in the name of getting votes in November.
Chris Galen is Senior Vice President of Member Services at NMPF. He first talks about the concerns raised by the average consumer over what HPAI in dairy cattle means for consumers. He assures the public that farmers are making sure their products are safe and that the pasteurization process is more than enough to keep milk safe, even if it has come from a cow that is showing symptoms.
When it comes to what dairy producers need to know about what HPAI means for their herds, Galen says that common sense biosecurity practices will help you keep your herd healthy and productive through this time. Unlike birds, cattle don’t suffer from any life-threatening effects. There has been no need to destroy any affected animals. Commonsense care has been enough to make the cattle happy and healthy again.
