As we come out of 2023 and the varied weather we saw across the entire cornbelt, especially the drought we had in the west; we need to be prepared to protect our crops in 2024. Unless a miracle happens and the drought breaks quickly, we can expect our crops to start under pressure in the beginning of the year. That is why the folks at Corteva are telling producers to make sure weed control is a top priority. The conditions are just as tough for weeds, but we don’t want them taking advantage of any opportunities to get a foothold.
Ron Geis with Corteva and he talks about the challenges that 2023 has left behind for the 2024 growing season. It all starts with the drought.
Geis says the best approach in 2024 is to clean the slate, and that means going after the residual weeds and cleaning up for the new crops.
Drought conditions are going to pose challenges for your weed control program, but it won’t make it impossible if you stay in contact with your crop advisor and weed control specialist. You can always adapt your plan as the year unfolds.
