It won?t be long now, and we will see the planters rolling in earnest across Iowa. The first days of a new growing season are filled with excitement, anticipation, and angst. We are ready to see what we can produce, but we are also filled with trepidation because we don?t know what challenges we will face. There are so many things that are beyond your control when you raise your crops. So, why not make sure that you are doing all you can to handle all the things you have the power to control during the growing season. Like weed control. Why leave any of it to chance?
Rob Nixon is with Bayer, and he talks to us about the Xtend Crop Protection system from a high-level view. He talks about the success rate they have had compared to other systems and the satisfaction rate among their customers.
There is concern that there are farmers who are using these products irresponsibly and are causing damage to the environment and their neighbors? crops. While there may be a few bad actors, Nixon reminds us that there is a training program that certifies applicators after rigorous education on how to handle the product, how to apply properly in the fields, and the restrictions they may have in their part of the state. It really is mostly common sense and good practices that can be advantageous at the end of the day.
Nixon also reminds farmers that it is not wise and a poor return on investment to think that only one pass of one product is going to be all they need. He says you need to start your weed control plan early and incorporate many modes of action to have success during the year.
