WOTUS and 2023 Farm Bill at top of priorities for Congress this year

This year is very important for agriculture, as it is finally time for the next Farm Bill. We also have important issues like the new WOTUS rules and biofuels policies to consider as well. But before any of that can happen, Congress needs to elect a Speaker of the House. Iowa 4th District Congressman Randy Feenstra said they?re hoping to get that election resolved in the next 24 hours.

Recently, the EPA reinstated confusing WOTUS standards that feel like a step backwards instead of a step forward. Feenstra said this comes down to an issue of rural versus urban areas, but they have to find a way to come to an understanding.

As far as the Farm Bill is concerned, Feenstra said the main goal is to keep the programs that work while promoting things like market access and transparency and biofuels production.

On top of all of that, the battle for GMO corn exports is still continuing. Mexico?s planned ban on GMO corn ignores decades of progress and research to prove how safe and effective they are, and it?s also a violation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Feenstra said that?s why he joined in on a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai demanding that the Biden administration holds Mexico accountable.
