Soybean crop update for north central & northeast Iowa

While northwest Iowa has been dealing with drought conditions, north central and northeast Iowa have mostly received the rains they?ve needed to have a good soybean crop. LG Seeds Agronomist Jed Norman said they have a pretty great crop considering how late the beans were planted this year.

As the soybeans enter the pod fill stage, we need the weather to cooperate in order to maximize yields. However, there are things producers can do right now to be proactive instead of reactive. Norman said this is a great time to apply some fungicide and give those beans the best chance to grow.

This time of year is also known for pest issues. Some parts of the state are currently dealing with Japanese beetles tearing into the crops, while others are seeing other insects. Norman talked about some of the things producers should scout for right now.

With the derechos we?ve been seeing in recent years, volunteer corn can be a hassle to deal with as well. Norman provided some management tips for those Iowa soybean crops.
