Since Russia?s invasion of Ukraine, most of the global community has been doing what it can to help the Ukrainian people, without bringing on World War 3. The United States is among these countries. However, there are certain restrictions in place on the shipment of aid to the Black Sea.
Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is leading a bipartisan effort to circumvent the laws which state that at least 50% of aid shipped to a foreign country must be on a U.S.-flagged ship. She explains the details of this law and the bind it is putting on our shipments.
Under the current law, the President, the Secretary of Defense, or Congress can wave this restriction. Ernst talks about why it hasn?t been done by the administration, and why she felt it was time to have Congress do the job.
So where does the effort stand, what chances does Ernst think her initiative has, and what is the next step forward?
We will continue our talk with Senator Ernst next week, about the Biden Administration?s 30×30 plan.
