Iowa has joined this spring’s list of states that have been affected by High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and H5N1. It’s the same virus but has gone under a new moniker as the virus mutated to affect dairy cattle and humans.
Iowa has had a few cases spring up so far and Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig gives us a rundown on the situation.
Naig says that one thing that is different this year is that the strain showing up in bird populations shows the markers of having already been in dairy cattle. That poses some new questions as we look for solutions.
Naig says that the response in birds is going to remain the same, but for cattle, it is a different approach altogether.
Naig wants to reassure the consuming public that the food supply is safe.
