There were a few things that became a new normal while we dealt with the drought of the past couple of years. A lot of it was unpleasant. Dry ground, brown grass, and fire hazards were just a few we can name. However, if you were going to look for a silver lining in all of that, it would be the lack of mosquitoes. A lot of us didn’t even think about the fact that they weren’t around until this year when we noticed that they have returned with a vengeance.
The large upswing in mosquitoes’ presence has gotten entomologists and veterinarians’ attention across the Upper Midwest. You may not think that it is that big of a deal, but there are roughly 60-70 different types of mosquitoes, and they all have their differences. Entomologist PJ Liesch talks about how they keep all these different species straight.
There are several practical options to keep the population under control.
Look around your yard or farm to see if you are providing those skeeters with a good place to thrive. If you are, fix it.
