Tar spot has been a major issue in Iowa for several years now, with this year being no different. While pressure from tar spot right now is minimal, the recent weather may cause it to ramp up in the next few weeks. Last year was an example of how detrimental tar spot can be later in the crop year. Bryant Luers, an LG Seeds agronomist in southern Iowa, said there are a couple factors that are favorable for tar spot.

While things can be done to mitigate tar spot once it is in the field, Luers said the best way to manage it is by selecting the proper corn hybrids.

As for the crop conditions in southern Iowa, Luers said both corn and soybeans look very good outside of some more recent weather damage.
