Rain and cooler temps have flipped the script on this year?s crop

May was an incredibly dry month, and June wasn?t much better. This had us worried about drought stress in this year?s crop, but as DEKALB Asgrow Technical Agronomist Andrew Penney noted, the past two to three weeks have brought enough rain and cooler temperatures to really turn that mindset around.

Dry weather and storm damage had farmers particularly worried about their corn, but Penney said most of it has bounced back impressively.

With the amount of rain we?ve been getting, though, Penney said it?s important to keep an eye out for fungal diseases- like tar spot- that love the extra moisture.

During pollination, pests like Japanese beetles can cause problems by feeding on corn tassels. And with the drier weather we saw, Penney said corn rootworm is something to monitor as well.
