It is only a small percentage of lawmakers in Congress that know anything about rural America. Rural areas of the country make up only a small percentage of representation in the House of Representatives. Getting the story out to that many people is a Herculean task for the D.C. office of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), but they are meeting that challenge and engaging lawmakers on the issues hog producers are concerned about.

Nick Giordano is the Vice President & Counsel ? Global Government Affairs for the NPPC in the D.C. office. He talks about the political climate for agriculture in general and pork in particular. He says they have no problem ?punching above their weight class?, no matter what the issue.

Trade is one of the topics that garner the most attention when the NPPC talks with Congress. Giordano says that producers can hang their hats on a quality product.

The problem is that trade doesn?t seem to be a top priority for the current administration. However, because it isn?t a top priority, it isn?t as turbulent of a situation.
