The past week of weather in Iowa has felt more like July than May. The warm and dry conditions have allowed farmers to move quickly with planting, but the heat has some questioning if it is still spring. With abnormal warmth in mid-May, what do the summer and fall have in store for the weather this year?

USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says the possibility of drought expansion or intensification exists for the western and central U.S. as the year progresses. He says long range forecast tools have been consistent with wetness forecasted for the eastern U.S. even before the hurricane season.

Rippey says the Rockies are the dividing line for hotter weather in the western states and cooler in the east.

He offers this prediction on long range precipitation forecasts.

Rippey adds a disclaimer for long range forecasts and predictions.
