As we saw in this week?s crop progress report, Iowa farmers have had a great time with planting season this year, with progress in most areas being way ahead of the average. Even though northwest Iowa is still seeing more than its fair share of challenges from drought conditions, planting has being just as well there as it has been anywhere else. DEKALB Asgrow technical agronomist Jim McDermott gave us an update on what he?s been seeing in the area.
McDermott said the nearby weather conditions are looking favorable as well, so farmers should be able to finish planting soon.
A good number of farmers were able to get planted in that early April window, so McDermott said that crop standing and emergence has been a challenge so far.
Other than that, McDermott said perennial issues like drought, rootworm, and tar spot will continue to be an issue this year as well.
Fortunately, McDermott said that DEKALB products have been able to handle these challenges well.
On the Asgrow side of things, McDermott said the XtendFlex lineup will be able to allow for some flexibility as farmers navigate the drought conditions.
