When we have been talking about the pork industry lately, we have focused on things like the low market prices, and the Prop 12 issue. However, there is much more to what is going on in the industry. Obviously, when we are dealing with a global economy that is being strained for one reason or another, it is important to make sure that our export markets remain strong. The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is dedicated to carrying that momentum forward.

Maria Zieba is Vice President of International Affairs for the NPPC, and she talks about the good news of solid exports last year, and the strength we have seen so far in 2023.

Zieba says the caveat is that we are seeing much better numbers in the regions with which we have Free Trade Agreements.

There are some concerns about the future, especially when it comes to regulatory practices. New labeling rules could be a burden for the future of the U.S. pork industry.

Zieba explains how the proposed changes to the product labeling rules could open the United States up to retaliatory tariffs, especially from our two closest neighbors.

You may wonder what about labeling could upset the Canadians and Mexicans.
