No growing season is perfect; there are always challenges and issues that will present themselves as the season progresses. In northwest Iowa this spring, planting season was smooth with dry weather assisting farmers in getting their crops into the ground quickly. Those growers will be hoping the saying “plant in the dust and the bins will bust” rings true this season.

However, as the calendar has turned to June, northwest Iowa farmers are now dealing with some of their first challenges of the season. Northwest Iowa Beck’s Hybrids agronomist Eric Bartels says that he has been fielding questions about crop damage from high winds.

Bartels urges patience for what he says has been a solid start to the growing season.

He says early on the corn crop has started well but it is working through the “ugly duckling stage.”
