Today, the USDA announced that New World Screwworm was detected in the Mexican state of Nuevo León, approximately 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. In light of this news, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is urging the federal government to expedite key parts of their screwworm response. NCBA CEO Colin Woodall gave an update on the situation.
Woodall said that progress can’t stop at just speeding up the process of things that are already in progress- new technologies need to be tested and developed as well.
Woodall said the cattle industry needs help from more than just the USDA.
Woodall added that pressure needs to continue to be applied to the Mexican government so that they keep working on their response plan as well.
