Naig reports encouraging crop conditions in much of Iowa

Before planters even rolled into Iowa fields this spring, there were early warnings that a hot and dry summer could pose serious challenges for the 2025 growing season. While summer is still in its first week, crop conditions across much of the state are holding up well. Recent heat and timely moisture are helping to accelerate growth and development, especially in fields that were planted later or slowed by cooler temperatures in May and early June. So far, it’s a decent start for Iowa crops.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says he’s been encouraged by what he’s seen as he travels across the state. While conditions can vary from one field to the next, he says overall crop development is looking strong for this time of year.

Naig acknowledges that planting was a bit staggered this year, and some areas have faced weather-related setbacks like hail. Still, he says Mother Nature has been fairly generous overall, providing the warmth and rain crops need to thrive.

While challenges like uneven planting and isolated storms have cropped up, Iowa’s fields are largely on track thanks to recent heat and rainfall. Secretary Naig says continued cooperation from the weather will be key as the season progresses.
