Keeping pigs cool during hot summer months

by | Aug 19, 2025 | 5 Ag Stories, News

During the hot Iowa summer months, it is highly important for swine producers to protect their pigs from heat stress in order to maintain their health and productivity. Mark Oberreuter, ag engineer at Automated Production, said pigs are just as susceptible to heat stress as any other animals.

Oberreuter said that farmers should prioritize the fans in their confinements and make sure they are moving enough air to keep the pigs safe from the heat.

Oberreuter said air inlets are also effective at moving air through the building.

Cooling equipment is also important for maintaining swine health, especially when it comes to sow buildings.

It can be a lot to manage this many factors in a hog building and make sure they are running correctly at all times, but fortunately there is plenty of technology out there that can help to automate this process. Automated Production offers the EDGE 2 system, which handles all control applications including breeding, gestation, farrowing, nursery, and finishing.
