Iowans celebrate National Egg Month

May is National Egg Month, a perfect time to highlight the importance of egg consumption and the role egg production plays in Iowa.

Iowa is the nation’s leader in egg production. According to the Iowa Poultry Association, the state has approximately 60 million laying hens.

The Iowa egg industry is a big purchaser of Iowa’s other agricultural products. Iowa?s chicken layers consume 58 million bushels of corn and 30 million bushels of soybeans.

This industry also contributes mightily to a positive employment picture in Iowa. According to the Iowa Egg Council, Iowa?s egg producers create more than 8,000 jobs annually. $2 billion in total sales, $424 million in personal wages and over $19 million in state tax revenues.

It’s officially National Egg Month, so why not celebrate with some egg recipes?

This month, put some eggs in your Cinco de Mayo celebration, your mom’s brunch for Mother’s Day, and serve up some deviled eggs for your Memorial Day party.
