Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he was pleased to see the bipartisan infrastructure bill signed into law by President Biden.
At a White House gathering on Monday, President Biden signed into law a $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which includes $550 billion in new funding for transportation, broadband and utilities.
?Today, we?re finally getting this done,? Biden said. ?Things are going to turn around in a big way. This law is going to make high speed internet affordable and available everywhere urban, suburban, and rural. No parent should have to sit in a parking lot of a fast food restaurant again just so their child can use the internet to do their homework. That?s over.?
Senator Grassley voted in favor of the infrastructure bill as it made its way through the Senate. During his weekly press call with farm reporters Tuesday morning, Grassley said he was happy to see the bill get signed into law.
?This is something Iowans have been asking for at my town meetings for the last four years,? said Grassley. ?Don?t forget, Trump was trying to get a $2 trillion package. This is related to the problems we have with the highways. It?s related to 23 percent of our bridges being structurally deficient. Consequently, people want safe bridges to drive over.?
Grassley says many farm and government groups in Iowa have expressed support of the infrastructure package.
?I will bet we had a list I put out of at least 25 organizations or groups that wanted this bill to pass,? said Grassley. ?I had a chance to vote for it and I did vote for it because it was the right thing to do.?
The White House calls the legislation ?a once-in-a-generation investment in our Nation?s infrastructure and competitiveness.? The legislation focuses on the needs of rural America through broadband, ports and waterways, as well as roads and bridge projects.
Ahead of the signing, President Biden named Mitch Landrieu as senior advisor responsible for coordinating implementation of the legislation.
