The current U.S. dietary guidelines were created in 2020 and will expire in 2025. The new Dietary Guidelines are currently being developed by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and the committee hopes to issue the updated Guidelines for 2025-2030 by the end of 2024.

The Beef Checkoff was one of 83 organizations and individuals that had the chance to give thoughts during public commentary for the new set of Dietary Guidelines which are being crafted right now by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

That is Dr. Shalene McNeill, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Executive Director of Nutrition Research. She says that as Americans age beef can provide key nutrients that are needed by the human body.

McNeill says the scientific committee will turn over their recommendations to the USDA and Health and Human Services hopefully by the end of October 2024, so they can begin writing the dietary guidelines.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are the foundation for all federal food policies. McNeill says if it is not in the dietary guidelines, it is not going to be on the school lunch menu.
