Corn rootworm is an annual problem, and a highly varying one at that. In fact, there’s a lot we still don’t know about what encourages its growth or spread. As such, it’s important to stay prepared to prevent a multitude of things that could potentially cause problems in corn fields. Edwin Benkert, Bayer Traits & Systems technology development representative, said they have two products- SmartStax Pro and VT4PRO- that already have traits within them to help stave off corn rootworm.
Benkert said that having multiple modes of action is vital when managing any pest, but it’s especially helpful for corn rootworm.
However, you can’t rely on traits alone to protect you from rootworm. Benkert said that crop scouting is incredibly important as well.
All in all, Benkert said farmers need to make sure they have a broad toolbox to protect against and manage corn rootworm.
