Often referred to as the “billion-dollar pest,” soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is a major pest that farmers have to deal with every year. While we do have several great options, especially in genetics, it’s important to keep from relying too much on one single mode of action. Bill Backhaus, BASF soybean agronomist, said that, while it may be tempting to only use Peking soybean varieties, it’s important to rotate them with corn and other SCN-resistant soybeans like PI 88788 in order to keep Peking from losing its effectiveness.

Backhaus said there are also seed treatment options that can aid in the battle against SCN.

In general, Backhaus said being a good steward of the land and understanding the soil in your fields is the best way to keep SCN from wreaking havoc.
