The ag industry must do something about the average age of America’s farmers as it keeps rising. The next generation of ag leaders is entering the work force, but we’re not seeing enough of them return to the farm. Chad Hart, agricultural economist at Iowa State University Extension, talked about the reasons why.
Hart said it is difficult for young farmers to gather the necessary capital early on in their careers.
Hart said successful farm transitions to the next generation require a lot of planning.
Hart added that farmers have been successfully transitioning to the next generation for eight decades, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to do so.
