The European Commission has once again begun the process to delay implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation. U.S. Meat Export Federation Vice President of Economic Analysis Erin Borror said that is good news for the U.S., as the U.S. and several EU countries are seeking to simplify the regulation for nations that carry little to no deforestation risk.
The regulation, which would require importers of beef and other goods to show their products are not linked to deforestation, was delayed for a year at the end of 2024 as EU systems for implementation were not in place. While deforestation is not a concern for U.S. beef, the regulation, as it currently stands, would place a significant documentation burden on U.S. producers.
A delay would have to be approved by the European Parliament. For more information, visit usmef.org.
