Ernst: Senate Path tough after House Farm Bill vote

The U.S. House has passed its version of the Farm Bill, but the focus now turns to the Senate, where the path forward is expected to be more difficult.

While in Washington last week, I spoke with Iowa Senator Joni Ernst just as the House was preparing to vote on procedural rules to advance the legislation. Those rules were approved shortly after our conversation, clearing the way for final passage of the bill the following day.

Ernst says it is encouraging to see the House take action, but she notes the Senate has been slower to move and faces a different set of challenges when it comes to building support.

Now that the House has approved its version of the Farm Bill, attention shifts to the Senate, where reaching the 60-vote threshold will be critical. Ernst says the growing divide between rural and urban priorities is making it more difficult to find common ground, especially as lawmakers work through complex issues like California’s Proposition 12 and year-round E15 access.

She adds that pressure from both the administration and the ag community could help push negotiations forward, but it will still take cooperation across party lines to get a final bill across the finish line.
