Recently, Merck Animal Health announced the results of their first-ever consumer transparency study, which showed that a majority of consumers say that transparency in animal protein is extremely or very important. The study explored consumer desire for transparency in animal protein, such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy, and their perceptions of industry transparency when it comes to animal welfare and sustainability. Dr. Allison Flinn, executive director of value chain and consumer affairs with Merck Animal Health, said they wanted to research the consumer?s growing interest in transparency and how important that is in purchasing decisions.

Dr. Flinn said the study surveyed over 1,000 consumers who represent the U.S. shopper and defined transparency as knowing how food was grown, raised, and made.

Fortunately, Merck already has the technology to provide information on transparency to the consumer with DNA TRACEBACK. This platform is the most advanced meat traceability solution and the leading technology on the market that verifies the exact origin of meat products. Dr. Flinn said that DNA TRACEBACK can help to cut through the complexity that arises as meat products travel through the supply chain.

Dr. Flinn said DNA TRACEBACK will also help to create and take advantage of opportunities in other areas that their consumer transparency study identified.

Dr. Flinn added that Merck is honored to be able to partner with the cattle industry and help producers be as successful as possible.
