As we learn more about the benefits of cover crops, we’ve seen increased adoption of them across the state. One farm in Boone is even applying those cover crops to a different product: pumpkins. Jeremy Gustafson, a member of Practical Farmers of Iowa, gave a tour of his farm and how he uses cover crops at a recent PFI Field Day.
Gustafson said PFI has been very helpful with information about adopting cover crops, and they even helped him get a start on his cover crop seed business with the Cover Crop Business Accelerator program.
Gustafson said he experiments a good amount with his cover crop strategies at this point, but he still recommends that farmers start small with adopting them.
Gustafson said the weather has an increased impact on cover crops, so it’s important to adapt to the changes that Mother Nature might throw your way.
Gustafson added that PFI events like this allow him to not only share what he’s learned but also learn more from other farmers in attendance.
