The cattle industry is often targeted by activists who seek to ruin it, which is why advocacy is so incredibly important. If we don’t tell our story, someone else will tell their version of it. The Cattlemen’s Beef Board is one of the organizations that seeks to combat misinformation by promoting real cattle producers from real farms and ranches. Cattlemen’s Beef Board Chair Jimmy Taylor said they have board members from across the country who volunteer to tell the real story.
Sustainability is a hot topic within the industry, but it’s a criticism that’s leveled at it too. Nobody is claiming that the industry is perfect, but much of that criticism stems from the fact that most people are several generations removed from the farm nowadays. Taylor said that cattle producers are already working hard to be sustainable, so they have to get out there and show people.
Taylor said they’ve already picked out the promotional projects that they will carry out over the course of next year.
Not every advocacy effort needs to be massive, though. Sometimes the most effective way to tell your story is to just open up the dialogue and have conversations with people who might be less informed.
