As swine producers continue to face labor challenges, they need to find ways to make their jobs easier and more efficient. Recognizing this issue, Boehringer Ingelheim is introducing a new oral gel administration method for its Lawsonia and Salmonella vaccines. Dr. Greg Cline, Senior Key Account Veterinarian for Swine at Boehringer Ingelheim, said both pathogens are fairly common issues for pigs.
Traditionally, oral vaccine has been a very involved process, and since pigs are so ornery, it takes a lot of labor to vaccinate. But with this new oral gel, Dr. Cline said the pigs can basically vaccinate themselves.
Dr. Cline said they?ve done several studies that prove that the new administration method isn?t just easier on labor- it?s also very effective and efficient.
The gel, which is slightly more viscous than water, piques the natural rooting instinct of the pigs so they can apply it themselves.
For each administration, Dr. Cline said they make sure there?s enough vaccine for every pig to get an adequate amount.
Dr. Cline said the idea of applying the vaccine gel to a comfort mat originated from the idea to apply the vaccine to a sow?s udder.
Dr. Cline added that Lawsonia and Salmonella need to be taken seriously because they lower gain efficiency and, more importantly, cause the pigs a lot of discomfort.
