The front line of defense against foreign animal disease in the United States is provided by another four-legged friend that isn?t always thought of for security purposes. The Beagle Brigade greets visitors at United States airports and other points of entry to help prevent the introduction of harmful plant pests and foreign animal disease from entering the U.S.
Andrew Bailey, National Pork Producers Council Legal Counsel, says that the Beagle Brigade provides an invaluable service for U.S. Customs & Border Protection.
Beagles? strong sense of smell and ability to discriminate and target a specific odor make them ideal for border protection duty says Bailey.
Bailey says that foreign animal disease prevention is a clear priority for the entire pork industry in the new Farm Bill.
He says protecting and valuing the programs of the three-legged stool of animal health is a big focus for the 2023 Farm Bill.
The Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network spoke with Andrew Bailey of the NPPC at World Pork Expo 2023.
