There aren?t many in the agriculture industry that do not understand this statement: pigs smell. In the rural parts of the country, we accept that. However, the topic of smell has become more and more prevalent, and so are the solutions to the problem.
Dr. Ellen Davis is a Swine Technical Services Manager for Arm & Hammer. She talked with us about a product called Certillus Eco, which is a feed additive designed to manage the microbiology of manure pits. Dr. Davis tells us about how it works.
Dr. Davis says that they are going right to the source, the hog. They aren?t attempting to mask the problem; they want to solve the problem.
Dr. Davis says the results they have been seeing are very good. Nitrogen retention is one of the benefits of the product. Keeping that nitrogen available for fertilizer also cuts back on the ammonia volatilization, which helps the swine health overall.
They have also witnessed about a three percent increase in feed efficiency in the hogs that are being fed Certillus Eco.
Dr. Davis recommends about a half of a pound per ton of feed for the long-term maintenance of the manure pit.
