AgriGold agronomist talks early season crop management

by | Jun 2, 2022 | 5 Ag Stories, News

As we start the month of June, many farmers are either finished with planting or are wrapping it up soon. Of course, that doesn?t mean all the work is done. Now, it?s time to look for crop emergence and stands. Southwest Iowa AgriGold Agronomist Sue Brakhane, who is based in Winterset, said there?s a pretty big variety of crop maturity in her area.

A major concern lately has been the delayed planting dates, which could affect the maximum yields we see in the fall. Brakhane said we?re definitely away from the maximum yield date at this point, but the weather will still have a huge impact on this year?s yields.

Evaluating crop stands in emergence can be somewhat confusing, but it?s an important step in crop management and analysis. Brakhane offered some tips on how to effectively evaluate your fields.

Right now, we?re seeing some nice, easy spring temps, which will help out these freshly planted crops. However, these cool, moist conditions can cause other issues with pests and residues. Brakhane said she likes how the weather looks, but that doesn’t mean you can get complacent, as there have been reports of slugs on crops in Audubon County.

Early season weed management is also very important right now, especially since corn doesn?t like to have any competition. Brakhane said it?s important to check herbicide labels to make sure your crops don?t get injured when you apply it.

Every field is different, and there will even be some variance in crop conditions within the same field. Brakhane said it?s important to get out there early and make some observations before you move on with any plans.
