Labor and the workforce are hot topics in the economy these days. For agriculture, it is just another day as we continue to call on lawmakers to pursue labor reforms. Political Candidates come and go while promising changes to these issues, but if you have noticed, nothing has really changed.
The House passed the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, but the Senate is just letting it sit in its inbox. House Western Caucus Chair Congressman Dan Newhouse says that while there is support, the Senate has no sense of urgency.
The bill is supposed to contain the reformation of the H-2A program, which is a concern for those trying to get employees from other countries who are willing to come to the U.S. and work.
Newhouse expressed frustration about why a program was good enough last year, but the same program is not acceptable this year.
