This September was the wettest month in Iowa in roughly 112 years, and farmers are feeling the impacts of that intense amount of rain. Producers in the southern parts of the state have even observed sprouting in their fields, which can reduce grain quality and ruin the market value. Dan Bjorklund, technical agronomist at Landus Cooperative, said southwest Iowa has seen the most sprouting.
Bjorklund said sprouting is somewhat hybrid-dependent in corn, as hybrids that have more vertical ears hold on to water more and encourage sprouting.
Bjorklund said insect damage was an underrated contributor to sprouting in soybean fields.
