Last Friday President Trump announced the administration’s plan to allow an additional 300,000 metric tons of tariff-free beef imports over the next 90 days. In a social media post, President Trump said the beef would sell at roughly 25% below market prices to help consumers, but United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) says that the announcement creates uncertainty for Iowa’s producers.
Senator Grassley adds that Iowa’s producers are well placed to help lead the efforts in rebuilding the cattle herd, but farmers need more certainty to make long term rebuilding plans.
Senator Grassley made his comments on Tuesday during his weekly ag conference call with farm broadcasters and reporters.
