Now that we are in the stretch run of the growing season, it won’t be long until corn growers fire up their combines and begin harvesting. However, there are still a lot of things that farmers can do the rest of the growing season and during harvest to optimize their approach and dial in management decisions.
On Tuesday Wyffels Hybrids held its third “Between the Rows” event of the season to share agricultural insights and expert-led field observations at the Wyffels’ production facility in Ames. Mike Witt is an area agronomy manager with Wyffels Hybrids and he tells the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network that southern rust pressure is not as intense as last season in Iowa.
With disease pressure not as high as it was in 2025, Witt says that one of the biggest management decisions for farmers in 2026 has been fungicide application timing.
Witt says that farmers have dealt with nitrogen issues this year in areas where conditions have been too wet and in places where it has been too dry.
The “Between the Rows” event also helped farmers learn how to properly calibrate their combines for harvest and how to better identify corn diseases that affect their crops.
