Tracking consumer demand, preferences, and habits with the Meat Demand Monitor

by | Jul 10, 2026 | 5 Ag Stories, News

The Meat Demand Monitor (MDM) is a monthly research project that tracks U.S. consumer demand, preferences, attitudes, and purchasing behavior related to meat and protein products. It is led by researchers at Kansas State University and is funded in part by the Beef Checkoff and Pork Checkoff programs.

Glynn Tonsor is a professor in the department of agriculture economics at Kansas State University, and he tells the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network what goes into the MDM each month.

Tonsor says the MDM is unique in the perspective it provides for the meat industry and consumers.

He says that the MDM confirms that meat and protein remain in high demand for consumers in 2026.
