The push for nationwide year-round E15 could soon clear one of its biggest hurdles yet as the U.S. House prepares to vote on standalone legislation next week that would permanently allow the fuel blend to be sold through the summer driving season nationwide.
Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says momentum surrounding the legislation has grown significantly in recent weeks as lawmakers face pressure from both agriculture groups and consumers dealing with high fuel prices.
The legislation was originally tied to broader farm bill discussions before eventually moving forward as its own standalone measure. Supporters say that it allows lawmakers to directly address the long-debated issue of allowing E15 sales year-round nationwide.
Currently, Iowa and seven other Midwestern states already have year-round access to E15, but supporters say a permanent national solution would remove uncertainty for fuel retailers and encourage more stations nationwide to invest in the infrastructure needed to offer the higher-ethanol blend.
Skor says support for the measure extends well beyond ethanol producers and farm organizations, especially as fuel prices remain elevated nationwide.
Supporters of the legislation also continue highlighting the potential impact on corn demand. Skor said nationwide E15 usage could significantly increase domestic corn utilization at a time when producers are dealing with large supplies and lower commodity prices.
She says year-round E15 would also provide certainty for fuel retailers who have been hesitant to invest in additional infrastructure while relying on temporary summer waivers from the federal government.
While the House vote is viewed as a major step forward, the legislation would still face additional hurdles in the Senate. Skor acknowledged the Senate presents different political dynamics and opposition groups, but she believes a successful House vote would increase pressure on senators to act.
President Donald Trump has already indicated he would sign the legislation if it reaches his desk. Growth Energy is encouraging farmers and ethanol supporters to contact lawmakers ahead of next week’s vote as advocates push for what they believe could be the strongest opportunity yet to permanently expand year round E15 nationwide.
