Manure from hog operations is a renewable, sustainable resource that adds significant value to agricultural systems. However, as with all aspects of agriculture, safety is the first priority when managing manure systems says Marguerite Tan, director of environmental programs at the National Pork Board.
Tan emphasizes manure safety by advising producers to avoid entering hog buildings during pumping and agitation, ensuring maximum ventilation, and turning off potential ignition sources. Tan says these simple precautions can help prevent dangerous gas exposure and reduce the risk of accidents during manure handling.
Tan adds that producers and manure handling contractors should review and update their emergency action plans related to manure pumping, storage, and toxic gas exposure.
Before beginning the manure removal process Tan says that producers need to ensure all protective gear is available for workers and a safe plan is in place. Visit YouTube and search for “Manure Know How” for a comprehensive Pork Checkoff video about manure handling.
