FBI partners with agriculture to defend food supply

Protecting the nation’s food supply is a critical part of national security. While the likelihood of a bioterrorism attack on American agriculture may be low, the stakes are extraordinarily high. An intentional strike against crops or livestock would not only threaten the safety and availability of food here at home but also disrupt the global marketplace that depends on U.S. agricultural exports. From grocery store shelves to international shipping lanes, the ripple effects of such an event would reach far beyond our borders.

The FBI is widely recognized for investigating crimes of every kind, but fewer people realize its role in protecting America’s food and farm systems. Scott Mahloch, Weapons of Mass Destruction Coordinator with the FBI, explains the potential threats facing U.S. agriculture.

Mahloch emphasized that the FBI’s outreach at major agricultural gatherings helps them connect directly with farmers, companies, and even international visitors. These events provide a platform to highlight the importance of safeguarding property, processes, and production methods that are vital to maintaining the security of the food system.

Mahloch said it’s vital to remember that every farm matters when it comes to protecting American agriculture. Using a dairy farm as an example, he noted that whether it’s a small family herd or a large commercial operation, each plays a role in feeding people and sustaining rural communities. That’s why security efforts aren’t just aimed at big companies, but at making sure every farm, no matter the size, is protected and prepared.

He explained that risks can be found at every stage of the agricultural supply chain, from production to distribution.

Mahloch explained that while technology has brought tremendous gains to U.S. agriculture, it also creates added risks that need to be addressed.

The FBI reminds farmers and agribusiness leaders that, while the threat of bioterrorism to U.S. agriculture remains low, vigilance is crucial in maintaining the nation’s food supply security. Anyone who observes suspicious activity involving chemical, biological, or radiological materials is urged to report it by calling 855-TELL-FBI.
