Connecting consumers with dairy producers at the Iowa State Fair

by | Aug 11, 2025 | 5 Ag Stories, News

The Iowa State Fair is a major opportunity to connect consumers with the farmers who raise their food. One of the most in-depth experiences is in the dairy industry, as fairgoers can witness the milking process, milk a cow themselves, and watch youth connect with the farm-to-table process at Little Hands on the Farm. Midwest Dairy brought Maquoketa, Iowa, dairy farmer Amber Selman to the Iowa State Fair to visit with fairgoers and discuss her experience in the industry, consumer perception, and how the dairy checkoff impacts local communities.

Selman said there are many different opportunities to witness the impact of the dairy industry at the Iowa State Fair.

The Butter Cow is probably the most iconic product of the dairy industry, with fairgoers flocking to the John Deere Ag Building every day. Selman said the butter cow tradition has been going strong at the fair for well over 100 years.
