The weather has brought plenty of rain for most parts of the state recently, and it has done so in large bursts. In fact, some parts of central Iowa saw over 4.5 inches of rain in a single day. This is great for the soil moisture profiles, but it was almost too much rain to handle. Dr. Justin Glisan, state climatologist for Iowa, said that, while we won’t complain about getting rain, it is preferable to see it distributed over a longer period of time.
Fortunately, the soil was dry enough to be able to handle even the highest reported amounts of rain.
Hopefully, the soil will be able to stay wet for a while too. June is usually the second-wettest month in Iowa, and Glisan said the forecast looks like it might support that fact.
