Spring weather tests crop nutrition, protection plans

by | May 29, 2025 | 5 Ag Stories, News

The next stage of the 2025 growing season is well underway, as crops emerge across the state and farmers shift their focus to post-emergence crop protection. With applications on the horizon, timing and field conditions will be key. Spring started off warm and dry, but recent swings toward cooler, wetter weather have made it a challenge to stay on schedule.

FULL INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW SCHOLTZ OF CHS (9 min)

Northwest Iowa has been no exception to the recent weather shifts, and that’s where CHS Retail Product Specialist Andrew Scholtz is keeping a close eye. He says farmers are currently evaluating crop stands and field conditions to determine the best path forward.

Scholtz discusses his concerns with what he’s seeing in Northwest Iowa fields and what farmers need to be thinking about.

Scholtz adds that now is the time to confer with your agronomist and see if options like micro fertilizers are right for your fields. Giving that crop a little extra boost while you are making a post-emergence pass may be the best thing to give your plants another shot of vigor.

One challenge with the recent weather pattern is whether pre-emergence chemistries were properly activated. Scholtz says that if conditions weren’t ideal early on, incorporating adjuvants could be key to maximizing the effectiveness of your weed control program.

As the season progresses, staying proactive is crucial to protecting yield potential. If you have questions about what you’re seeing in your corn and soybean fields, reach out to your local CHS agronomist for tailored advice and support.
