Farmers and the agricultural industry are facing an overwhelming amount of uncertainty, with challenges coming from every direction. From unpredictable weather patterns and fluctuating market prices to labor shortages and evolving regulations, it often feels like the pressures just keep piling on. Each season brings new hurdles, making it harder than ever to plan for the future and stay resilient in an industry that never slows down.

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) has made passing a new farm bill its top priority this year. CEO Ted McKinney says research funding for universities is also high on the list. Other key issues are included as well.

McKinney emphasizes the importance of strong partnerships between federal and state governments, noting that they play a crucial role in supporting agriculture. However, he also expresses concern about potential challenges in maintaining and strengthening these collaborations.

Labor remains a top concern for NASDA, especially the need for year-round agricultural workers. McKinney stresses that immigration and guest worker programs must be improved to ensure farmers have a reliable workforce.

McKinney emphasized the importance of trade, particularly the need to diversify markets for agricultural products. Expanding trade opportunities can help farmers reduce risk and remain competitive in a changing global economy. However, tariffs and shifting trade policies add uncertainty, making it harder for farmers to access and expand into new markets.

State directors of agriculture will be working hard to tackle these challenges, advocating for policies that support farmers and rural communities. Their leadership at the state level will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry and ensuring agriculture remains strong.
