When it comes to fighting food insecurity, nutrition is highly important. The main struggle with that, though, is the availability of healthy ingredients. You might be surprised to hear that the WesleyLife Meals on Wheels program gets its leafy greens from its own hydroponic farm in the heart of Des Moines. Shannon Draayer, executive director of community nutrition at WesleyLife, said the farm provides a unique volunteering opportunity and plenty of nutritious ingredients.
Not only do the greens make their dishes more nutritious, but they also make them look even more appetizing.
Even though the Christmas holiday is over, that doesn’t mean the season of giving and helping others is done. Draayer said they still have plenty of openings for volunteers.
