The holiday season is a joyous time for most of us as we gather with our families, enjoy great meals, and share gifts with each other. For some people, though, the holidays can be a difficult time to get through. All across Iowa, there are many seniors who spend the holidays alone. That’s why WesleyLife has the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers nutritious meals- and some meaningful human connection- to seniors in their area. Shannon Draayer, executive director of community nutrition at WesleyLife, the social aspect of the program is just as important as the meals.
Draayer said they deliver thousands of meals every day, and most of those seniors are living alone. That’s why the social aspect is so incredibly important.
Draayer said they have plenty of volunteer opportunities for anyone who would like to deliver meals, especially during this holiday season.
It’s one thing to provide meals, but it’s another thing entirely to provide meals that are healthy, nutritious, and tasty. Draayer said a dietitian designs a new menu for them every month.
