Settling into a long-term period of low commodity prices

It’s no surprise to you that market prices for grains are low. They’re nowhere near what we enjoyed a few years ago. Many factors are driving this situation, but understanding them doesn’t necessarily make it any easier.

The main question I Have been hearing farmers ask is, “When will it get better?” That’s a legitimate question, but for now, the odds are not in our favor. There is just too much negative pressure on these markets to see a real change. Just because we look to be settling in for a long-term run of low prices doesn’t mean that it is never going to get better. Ag Economist Joe Janzen says that there are a few things that have to happen first.

There’s a lot of fear and speculation about President-Elect Trump’s proposed tariffs and their effect on agriculture. However, Janzen said his concerns for a low-price marketplace in 2025 started before the tariffs were announced.

Of course, there are still those influences we cannot predict. Weather can always change, and market disruptions can happen as well.
